Summary :

The aim of the EXPOLE project is to make the most of an exceptional collection of documents relating to French polar expeditions between 1947 and 1987, from the archives of Simone Weiller, the expeditions’secretary and press officer. The collection includes a variety of documents, such as photographs, maps, letters, press articles and objects such as stuffed penguins, all of which help to retrace the history of the expeditions led by Paul-Émile Victor. The project is being led by scientific teams from LSCE and GEOPS, in collaboration with institutions such as LUMEN, IDHES-Evry and the Archives Nationales, to create a traveling exhibition to be inaugurated in autumn 2025 at LUMEN, the center for scientific culture in Paris-Saclay. The exhibition will feature 12 informative panels, visual and audio elements, and historical objects. Its aim is to raise public awareness of scientific missions to Antarctica, and to highlight the lesser-known contributors to these expeditions, such as Simone Weiller. This scientific mediation project also aims to strengthen the links between science and society by offering accessible and immersive content.
