Summary :

The LSCE’s glaciology research team has a documentary collection composed of public and private archives (photos, stamped envelopes, maps, notes, press articles, mission reports, a few objects including stuffed penguins, audio reels) from French polar expeditions between 1947 and 1987. It traces the history of France’s first scientific polar expeditions, and in particular the creation and construction of the Dumont d’Urville base, France’s gateway to Antarctic logistics. With a view to its transfer to the National Archives, this collection has already been classified and described. An exhibition dedicated to the public at large will be held in 2025, presenting a selection of documents on a variety of themes relating to work and science in polar environments. This exhibition will be designed on panels so that it can travel and is intended to be presented firstly on the Saclay plateau (at Lumen and the LSCE) and in the National Archives as part of an exhibition on Antarctica in 2028. The intern will finalise the inventory and help to create the panels for the exhibition, which will include digitising the images, laying out the panels and organising the display cases.
