Summary :
The NAOSS project (Digitization of Near Eastern Antiquities: Seals and Sealings from the Louvre Museum) is dedicated to the digitization and documentation of one of the world’s most significant glyptic collections. Housed in the Department of Near Eastern Antiquities (DAO) at the Louvre Museum, this collection encompasses nearly 5,500 cylinder seals, 2,100 stamp seals, and 3,000 modern impressions, spanning over seven millennia (from the 6th millennium BC to the 1st millennium AD) and covering five major regions: Mesopotamia, Iran, the Levant, Anatolia, Central Asia, and the Arabian Peninsula. For the first time, the entire glyptic collection will be accessible to both the scientific community and the public through a uniform, high-quality photo library. Advanced analytical tools will also be available to researchers and students to support their studies. By the end of the project, each artifact will be fully documented in high definition and made available on the Louvre Museum’s collections website (https://collections.louvre.fr/). Pre-designed layout sheets will provide detailed information, including measurements, photographs and orthophotographs. RTI images and 3D models will be archived and preserved within the DAO and made accessible similarly to the physical collection.
