Summary :
Our project aims to purchase an AGICO MFK2-FA susceptibilimeter with its CS-4 heating unit. It is part of a long-standing collaboration between IPGP, LAMS, IMPMC, and Mines Paris-PSL characterized by the sharing of magnetic measurement instruments. Magnetic susceptibility measurements are at the heart of the majority of studies focused on mineral magnetism and its many applications in fields as varied as geomagnetism, geodynamics, archeology, paleoclimatology, and the environment. The studies highlighted in our project, all of which rely on the acquisition of numerous magnetic susceptibility measurements (raw values, heating and cooling cycles, anisotropy, frequency-dependent measurements), concern archeomagnetism with cultural heritage artifacts, the environment with the traceability of metal pollution in Paris through the study of plane tree bark (Ecorc’Air citizen science project), and loess (eolian sediments) which, among other things, enable us to characterize the environmental and climatological conditions on continents during the last glacial/interglacial cycles. These studies involve over fifteen researchers and students from our respective research groups. They currently depend on a single susceptibilimeter that has been intensively used for over 20 years, and whose manufacturer (AGICO) no longer provides repairs. The MFK2-FA with the CS-4 unit will ensure the continuity of all our studies, while bringing new functionalities (frequency-dependent measurements) that will be of great benefit to our research into ancient and present-day environments.
